Infertility and Acupuncture

In the July/Aug 2012 issue of Experience Life, acupuncture was listed as one of the natural ways to increase fertility (http://experiencelife.com/article/fertility). This comes as no surprise to me, as acupuncture has been used extensively in China and around the world to treat male and female infertility. Many research studies and reviews support the positive effects of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in the treatment of infertility and miscarriages.

Female infertility is a complicated issue with many different underlying causes. A small percentage of infertility cases are due to anatomical abnormalities of the uterus, cervix or fallopian tube, while the majority cases are due to dysfunction of ovulation, which manifests as irregular menstrual period. This, in turn, can be cause by many other endocrine dysfunction, such as thyroid disorder (hyperthyroid or hypothyroid), adrenal disorder, PCOS, insulin resistance, etc. Stress is an undeniable factor as well, as it has a significant impact on endocrine system.

Acupuncture obviously is not able to change any anatomical abnormalities. But it is a very powerful tool to normalize endocrine functions and re-establish normal ovulation and menstrual cycle. With the help of other methods of naturoapthic medicine, such as Chinese herbs and homeopathy, fertility should no longer be a daunting task!
